Quinoa
A popular rice substitute that is gluten-free and much higher in protein than rice.
Riced cauliflower
A low-carb, low-calorie alternative to rice. It has a mild flavor, with a texture and appearance similar to that of cooked rice.
Shirataki rice
Made from konjac root, Shirataki rice is another low-carb and low-calorie popular rice alternative.
Whole-wheat couscous
Made of very small pearls of flour, couscous is a type of pasta that’s widely used in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. It’s richer in fiber and protein.
Barley
A popular grain that people can purchase as whole grain, pearled, flakes, or flour versions. Barley contains antioxidants called lignans and may also help lower cholesterol levels and balance blood glucose and insulin.
Chickpea Rice
A rice substitute made from chickpea that contains protein and fibers.
