Being active can feel like the last thing you want to do when you’re already sweating from the summer heat. Luckily, there are some fun activities that might not feel like exercise that will get your heart rate elevated and move your muscles. Try some of these unique fitness options next time you’re struggling to get your workout in.
Gardening
For those with a green thumb, getting outside and transforming your yard can be great exercise. Lifting bags of soil, pushing a wheelbarrow and raking will get you sweating in no time. If you don’t have a yard of your own, explore community gardens or consider growing your own plants or vegetables on your windowsills.
Biking
Summer is the perfect time to cut down on your driving time. Next time you need to run some errands, consider riding your bike. If you’re looking for a longer ride, explore your local forest preserves or bike trails to get some extra miles in and crush your cardio for the day.
Farmers’ Markets
For a less traditional workout, consider walking around your local farmers’ market. Not only is this a great way to get your steps in for the day, but you can also find some tasty and healthy treats as you explore.
Hiking
Grab a friend and explore some local hiking spots! Find spots with different levels of elevation to increase your cardio burn or stick to flatter trails for a lower-intensity workout. Make sure to wear your sunscreen and bug spray.
Yoga
Whether you’re advanced or just starting out, yoga is a great way to increase flexibility, strengthen muscles, and connect with your body and mind. Set up your yoga mat outside and soak in the sun while you stretch.
Swimming
Incorporate aquatic activities into your workout routine this summer! Swimming is a great way to burn calories and build muscle, all while having less impact on your joints than other exercises. If you’re swimming outside, make sure to protect your skin and wear sunscreen.
However you like to stay fit, explore the variety of ways you can have fun while staying active this summer!
